Extended Service Contracts - Warranty

An auto warranty is included in the price of a new car.  Most used cars will need an extended service contract or extended warranty which is sold separately and cost extra. Extended service contracts are like people, they come in all sizes and shapes.  An extended service contract is nothing more than an insurance policy.  You are betting you will have a problem with the vehicle in the future, and the company is betting you won't.  An extended service contract is only good if it pays off when you need it.

Should you purchase an extended service contract?

That depends on what you paid for the vehicle, the type of vehicle, and the cost of the extended service contract.  If you purchase a 4-wheel drive SUV for $20,000.00, it would be wise to purchase an extended service contract.  A $2,000.00 truck to haul trash would not warrant an extended service contract.  The most important question in purchasing an extended service contract is, "Can you afford to replace a major component (engine, transmission, 4x4) in the future"?  A major used car purchase should have an extended service contract.

Other factors you should consider when making a decision to purchase an extended service contract is the length of time you plan on keeping the vehicle and the miles you plan on driving the vehicle.  If you are planing on selling or trading the vehicle in 24 months, and you will only be driving 12,000 miles per year, then a 24 month 24,000 mile service contract would fit your needs.  However, if your driving habits require more mileage, you would want to look at a 36 month 36,000 mile extended service contract.  You do not need the extra months, but you will need the extra mileage protection.

Make sure the extras are included at no charge.

Hi-tech coverage, free roadside assistance, substitute transportation and trip interruption.  Trip interruption will reimburse you for lodging and meal expenses if a covered breakdown occurs more than a 100 miles from home.
