Alabama
Auto Insurance
Some people want to know
why, if auto insurance is a requirement of
driving a car in the state of Alabama, so
many people are getting away without
having it? The state’s liability car
insurance law “clearly” states that all
drivers must have the insurance, and that
operating a motor vehicle without car
insurance is against the law.
However, a loophole in the system allows
people to drive without car insurance.
According to the latest statistics, one in
four drivers in the state of Alabama do
not have car insurance. Some people are
too cheap to buy it, many just cannot
afford it. However, for everyone who
drives with car insurance it is just not
fair when they get into an accident with
an uninsured motorist and their car
insurance rates go up because their auto
insurance company had to pay for it.
The problem is that when you apply for
your vehicle registration, or if you get
stopped by a policeman, you can show the
card that came with your once upon a time
car insurance, because there are no dates
that say that the policy is no longer in
force. This makes it look as if you have
car insurance when you don’t. You don’t
even have to keep the car insurance; you
just get the card and then cancel the
insurance.
Roughly 25% of drivers are taking
advantage of this, and the legislature is
trying to crack down on it. They say if
they can get cops to check to see if they
actually have insurance at roadside stops,
then they would nab many of them doing
this. However, for the police to be able
to do that they have to have a system that
would allow for it – so the state is
working on that as well.
