Auto
Insurance Must Change
Rocky Mountain lawmakers
say that the time has come where they must
change their auto insurance system, but
consumers will not be very happy about it.
They say that the new changes will cost
consumers more money than they are paying
now for auto insurance, but if they don’t
change the system they will end up with
major medical problems.
They say that the new bill, Senate Bill
193, will make all motorists increase
their coverage – if they don’t have it
already – to include a minimum of $25,000
in health benefits and $25,000 in
rehabilitation. They say that the medical
providers are currently losing money
because of the way the old system is set
up. They are currently working under a
three-year old tort auto insurance system
that just is not working.
The old PIP (Personal Injury Protection)
laws say that the auto insurance will
cover anyone hurt in the auto accident, no
matter who caused the accident. Each
insured’s auto insurance would pay for
their bills. But now that it is no longer
required to carry on auto insurance
policies, many are opting not to have it
because it saves them money. But medical
providers and trauma care workers are
waiting for payments because either
someone was uninsured or they are fighting
with the other auto insurance company.
Critics say that the problem with the bill
is that many people have health insurance,
and if they are injured in an auto related
accident it will cover them. They say that
by trying to make the underinsured pay for
coverage, they are penalizing those that
already have health insurance.
