Car
Insurance Policyholders Not Always Honest
A recent survey found
that many normally honest citizens would
lie to their car insurance company if
their car was stolen, and they had
forgotten to lock it. Many said that they
wouldn’t say they had locked it, they
would just forget to say that they hadn’t;
and still others said that they would out
and out lie about the fact that it had not
been locked.
Only one in five said that they would be
honest with their car insurance company
and tell them that they had not locked the
car. One in four said that they would
admit that they had not locked it, but
only if “strong pressure” was applied to
get them to admit it. Auto insurance
companies are concerned that most would
not say that they had been partly to
blame, and they say that is the same as
car insurance fraud.
They say that even in omitting the fact
that they had not locked the car is fraud,
and vehicle owners should know that if it
is discovered that they are lying they
will be charged with auto insurance fraud.
They say that most people did not see it
as fraud, but by omitting facts it is the
same as lying.
They also discovered that women were more
likely than men to tell the truth and that
even under pressure most men would not
crack but women would. They found that
only 6% would lie about not locking the
doors, whereas 11% of men would hold to
their story.
