Low Cost
Auto Insurance for California
California has decided to
expand its Low Cost Automobile Insurance
Program to low-income drivers that have a
good driving history. They would be able
to purchase car insurance under the plan
for under $400 a year. This saves them
from having to drive without car insurance
because they cannot afford it.
The California Department of Insurance has
decided that the auto insurance discount
would be offered to Merced, Monterey,
Santa Barbara, Tulare, Ventura, and Sonoma
Counties. Since state law requires all
drives be insured, this program will go a
long way to making sure that happens.
In those counties alone, more than 160,000
of them are driving without car insurance
because they cannot afford it. The program
would reduce the number of those driving
without car insurance, and thus assisting
everyone. The program began in 1999 and
helped those in Los Angeles and San
Francisco. Then the program was expanded
to Alameda, Fresno, Orange, Riverside, San
Bernardino and San Diego counties.
It was doing so well, that they decided to
expand it again last June to Contra Costa,
Imperial, Kern, Sacramento, San Joaquin,
San Mateo, Santa Clara and Stanislaus
counties. Now the program is in 22
counties in California and they are not
done yet. They say that over 30,000 car
insurance policies have been issued since
the inception, and the ability of more to
be a part of the program will make it even
more successful.
