Auto Loan Payment Options

There is a common misperception when it comes to paying your auto loan that you can kind of do whatever you want. Many people see the idea that if you pay your mortgage twice a month that you will end up paying it off sooner and you will pay less interest and decide that they are going to do it with their car loan. However, this is not always a good idea.

There is the simple fact that auto loans are not set up to be paid twice a month, and if you want to do something like this you need to check with the holder of your loan. The auto loan company may not know why you are sending these payments and will apply it as extra premium because it is not actually a payment on your loan. This then causes you to be hit with late fees and other processing fees because they don’t know what you are doing.

Then there is the fact of the matter that your auto loan is usually a pretty low interest rate. If you pay it off you want to make sure that you don’t have a bunch of unpaid credit card bills that are charging you more in interest than the auto loan is. There is also the fact that if you don’t have a savings account and you are paying off your car loan you are wasting a chance to set yourself up for success in the future.

You are better off taking your time with the auto loan and allowing yourself to get better off financially. By putting that money away you are saving for your future and if by some chance you lose your job or something else happens you will have that money to pay your normal auto loan payments.
