Wisconsin Bill Will Affect Auto Insurance
Companies
For many Wisconsin auto insurance
companies they have favorite car repair
shops that they use over and over. When
someone who has their auto insurance has
an accident, the company gives them the
name of some of the dealers that they
are used to working with and they
“steer” them in the direction of those
repair shops. They maintain that these
shops will give them the best pricing on
repairs and that is why they recommend
them.
However, new legislation would make that
“steering” illegal. They would have to
leave it up to the consumer to find
their own repair place, something that
the auto insurance companies say is a
bad idea. They contend that most
consumers do not have time to shop
around for the best deal, and so they
might end up paying for repairs out of
their own pockets.
But the auto repair places say that it
is only fair. They contend that if they
are not on the list that the auto
insurance company uses, they are losing
out on that business. They argue that it
will make repairs more competitive
because those repair shops won’t
automatically get the work – they will
have to bid for it along with everyone
else.
The auto insurance companies say that
this is going to end up delaying claims
for consumers and will ultimately
increase auto insurance premiums. They
say that this is a bad idea and they are
going to fight it.
