Visitors Will Pay for Crashes
According to Huntington Beach, visitors
are going to have to pay if they get
into an accident on their turf. The
California city says that they have put
out too much money for those people who
have had accidents there that do not
live there and that is not fair to
residents. As of right now, residents
end up paying for these accidents
through their taxes while non residents
have not had to pay for emergency
services.
They said that the new cost recovery
program will bring in about $100,000 a
year for the city – which is good
considering the costs that it takes to
help those that need them. Right now the
city is paying the fee for getting these
non residents out of their cars. They
said that it costs them almost $2,000 to
get them out of the wrecked car if they
are stuck, then another $750 if the car
is on fire and $405 for every hour that
a fire truck has to respond to the scene
– and that is per truck. Instead, they
are going to start billing the auto
insurance companies of the non residents
up to $3,000 for their part of the bill.
They said that the auto insurance
companies of these non residents should
be responsible for the charges, not the
tax payers of the city. If the person
that is in the accident does not have
auto insurance, then they will be billed
directly for those emergency services.
Residents will of course not be charged
as they have already paid for those
services whether or not they ever need
them.
