According to Robert P.
Spellane, Rep. 13th Worcester District of
Boston, taxpayers are being fed a line
when it comes to auto insurance reform in
the state of Massachusetts. Spellane, who
also happens to be the Vice Chairman of
the Joint Committee on Financial Services,
claims that the Boston Globe and the State
Attorney General are “playing politics
with auto insurance reform” and are not
actually telling taxpayers the truth about
what is going on.
Spellane recently wrote a letter to the
Boston Globe regarding the fact that there
was an editorial in the paper on December
2nd that said that auto insurance savings
were not what was promised the people of
Massachusetts. He says that the claims
that were made in that editorial are
misleading and thus they are playing
politics with what the facts really are.
Spellane points out that at no time has
there been any “credible evidence” that
would point to an 11% decrease in auto
insurance rates if the state’s auto
insurance commission had continued setting
the rates for the state. He says that the
Globe had a responsibility to tell their
readers that the Attorney General’s rate
recommendations were always considered
much higher than the final rate that was
approved by the Insurance Commissioner.
He goes on to say that the fact that the
AG keeps making recommendations that
cannot be passed, and that he never
challenged the auto insurance rates that
were passed, should have been telling
enough. He says that the auto insurance
rates that will actually be issued come
next April will be much lower than
originally speculated, but they will be
fair rates.
