Deer
Collisions Imminent?
According to a recent
State Farm Auto Insurance survey,
Wisconsin ranks third nationwide for the
number of accidents that will involve a
deer. In fact, your odds are worse than
you think. They have discovered that your
chances of getting into an auto accident
with a deer are actually one in 99 –
that’s a little scary especially for those
that find that most of their driving is
done on country roads, as this actually
increases their risk.
In fact, they have discovered that your
chance of hitting a deer in Wisconsin are
actually six times greater than the chance
of being killed in an auto accident that
involves another car. It is twice as great
as losing your luggage at the airport!
State Farm took their survey data from
motor vehicle registrations over the
course of mid 2006 through mid 2007.
Hawaii has the least amount of chance of
hitting a deer with your risk at 1:16,624.
Must not be a lot of deer in Hawaii?
As strange as it sounds, when one hits a
deer there is actually quite a bit of
damage done to your car. Depending on how
you hit the deer, you could actually be
looking at a totaled car. In fact more
than $100 million worth of damage to cars
in Wisconsin is caused by deer related
crashes. More than five cents from every
dollar paid for your auto insurance
actually goes to pay for deer collision
costs.
As the number of vehicles on the road
increases, understandably so does the
number of accidents involving wildlife of
any kind. However, it seems that deer do a
lot more damage than many other kinds of
wildlife, as things like raccoons won’t
leave a huge mess on the side of the road
that used to be your car.
