The first in a series of
auto insurance hearings started yesterday,
with Insurance Commissioner Nonnie S.
Burnes at the helm. The first rate setting
hearing was held to see if the state would
approve a new plan that would allow the
auto insurance companies to set their own
rates for their customers. Attorney
General Martha Coakley had called for the
hearing so that they could look into
specific auto insurance files.
Coakley wanted an examination of the rates
filed by Commerce Insurance of Webster,
which is currently the state’s largest
auto insurer. Barnes, however, wanted to
be very clear with everyone that this was
not going to turn into a lengthy process.
Burnes said that if the hearings were too
long then “consumers are never going to
get decent rates.” She even went as far as
to remind those on several occasions to
keep their remarks brief as she felt that
they had already gone on too long.
They asked Commerce how their rates were
achieved considering the fact that they
were 6% lower this year than they were
last year. They are not the only ones
being investigated. The state will be
looking into Arbella Mutual Insurance Co.,
Hanover Insurance Group, Premier Insurance
Co. of Massachusetts, and Safety Insurance
Co.
