Massachusetts Gets New Insurance
Commissioner
The state of Massachusetts has been
seeking to fill the position of
Commissioner for Division of Insurance
and they think they have finally found
someone to do it. Governor Deval Patrick
has named Joseph G. Murphy to the
position. Murphy has been the First
Deputy Commissioner of the Division of
Insurance since 2006 so he is fully
aware of what the position entails. He
has played a very active role in the
successful auto insurance reform that
has gone on in the state, and the
governor feels that he is the person
that can move forward in a positive
direction.
When Commissioner Nonnie Burnes started
mixing things up for the state and
changing the way that auto insurance was
handled, Murphy was there helping out
and seeing exactly what had to happen in
order for the state to move forward
successfully. He is used to dealing with
a $12 million budget, so the position
truly will not be a huge change for him.
He has already been serving as Acting
Commissioner sine Burnes left, so he is
aware of the day to day operations of
that position as well as his own.
Patrick said that he deserves a lot of
the credit for the way that the auto
insurance reform played out. He said
that he understood the need for managed
competition within the auto insurance
industry and how it would benefit their
residents.
He said that auto insurance reform and
health care cost containment were the
two most important things that they
could have gotten accomplished and he is
moving forward on seeing that they move
forward to getting those things
completed.
