Auto Insurance Penalties for Unsupportive Parents

The B.C. government has called on the auto insurance industry to help them penalize those that don’t pay child support. They want the auto insurance companies to deny them insurance if they have not paid. The government is looking at legislation that would make it illegal for them to hold auto insurance if they were not paying their child support payments.

The Insurance Brokers Association of BC (IBABC), says that they don’t want to be caught in the crossfire of the government’s attempts to get people to pay their child support by denying people car insurance. They say that they want provisions that will cover them if the bill gets passed.

The bill, Bill 33, needs to have amendments that would cover the auto insurance companies so that they are not responsible for ensuring that people are paying their child support payments. They say that it is impossible for them to police their customers and their child support payments, and that the province would need to be responsible for that duty.

The bill would not just target their auto insurance, it would also target their driver’s licenses and annual vehicle licenses as well. They say that the way the law currently works, they have to wait until you are five years behind on the payments before they can do anything. With the new bill they would lose their auto insurance, etc. immediately.

They say that not only is it a good way to enforce people paying their child support payments, but it also encourages them to not miss them in the first place.
