Prop 103
Nearing the End
It has been an uphill
battle for California drivers, but
Proposition 33 is finally coming to an
end. It has been a battle between the car
insurance industry and the voters for 20
years, and now it looks as if it is coming
to an end next August.
Insurance companies will have to be in
compliance with the new state rules that
say that the car insurance policies must
reflect your driving history, not your
residence. Proposition 103 has made these
changes mandatory for the car insurance
industry, but it was passed in 1988 and
the voters are still trying to get it
enforced.
The auto insurance companies have been
using a term called redlining to determine
how much people will pay for their car
insurance policies. This means that you
will pay more depending on what your zip
code is, instead of how you drive.
Therefore, if you live in a pricey zip
code and have a good driving record, you
could still end up paying more than
someone with a bad driving record in a
less expensive zip code.
However, that will all change once the car
insurance companies all get in line, which
looks as though will finally happen next
year. Many are upset that it has even
taken this long to come to fruition, and
they say it is a comment on how the
justice system works for those with money
as the car insurance lobbyists have been
able to keep the law from being put into
effect for twenty years.
