Stolen Cars
Going to Ghana
It happens quite
frequently these days, a homeowner gets
their car stolen and no one can locate it.
Next thing you know, someone in Ghana is
driving their car. It happens time and
time again, and many times they get away
with it. Sometimes a local customer
officer will catch the stolen car, but
quite often they don’t.
Many cars in Quebec and Ontario are being
stolen and shipped off in freighters over
to Ghana according to Canadian auto
insurance officials and investigators.
They say that hundreds of cars have been
stolen and sent over there, and it has
gotten so bad that the auto insurance
industry has sent people over to Ghana to
train local law enforcement on how to
recognize the stolen cars.
Ghana has become the hot spot for cars
according to auto insurance officials, and
much of it is due to the anti-corruption
campaign that has been going on in
Nigeria. Lagos has become a bigger risk
for auto theft rings, so they are moving
them to Tema now. The auto insurance
industry says that the majority of people
in Ghana cannot afford these cars and that
they get high prices in Togo, Benin, and
Cote d’Ivore instead.
However, as people continue to bring in
large luxury vehicles at high prices in
the region, those left at home without
their vehicles are paying higher auto
insurance premiums because of it. The auto
insurance industry has been trying to work
with the government to stop the cars from
leaving the country, but there is only so
much they can do.
