Reform Hurts All But Those Who Use It
State lawmakers in
Florida have recently passed a bill that
will spread the cost of windstorm
insurance across the state. So instead of
those that need the insurance paying for
the insurance, which is usually what
happens with home and auto insurance
policies, the state is spreading the cost
across the state so that those that need
it can pay less for it.
They are spreading the costs of windstorm
insurance across home and auto policies in
other parts of the state, and many are
unhappy about it. Those that currently pay
for the insurance don’t think that they
should have to incur the high costs and
that it is only fair that everyone pay
their fair share.
However, people in other parts of the
state point out that many of those that
need the windstorm insurance live in some
of the most affluent parts of the state,
and if they don’t want to pay the
insurance then they should move. They say
that if they could afford to live in those
areas that they would expect to pay higher
insurance policies as well.
According to the Property Casualty
Insurers that were commissioned, if a
modest hurricane should hit the West Palm
Beach area, and come across like it did
years ago, then people in Key West and
Miami would save over a thousand dollars a
year on their home owners policies, while
places like Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa
and Tallahassee would pay more for their
auto insurance.
