Adding Persons to Your Auto Insurance
Policy
When you get an auto insurance policy
you have certain people that you know
you have to add to it. You know that you
have to add in your spouse, and you know
that if you have children under the age
of 18 on your policy, but what about
people who work for you? What if your
babysitter drives your children anywhere
– do they have to be added to your auto
insurance policy as well?
That depends on how much driving your
babysitter does, but most often the
answer to that is going to be no. Most
people have their babysitter drive here
and there but nothing for an extended
period of time. If this is not the case
then you might want to consider adding
her if she is driving your car a lot and
driving your children a lot of the time.
Auto insurance coverage is designed to
cover the car, so when she or he is
driving your children or just your car,
she is covered under that policy.
But your babysitter must have permission
obviously to drive that car. It is
always a good idea to have your
babysitter carry a note from you on her
or him when driving the car so that if
they are in an accident you won’t have
to worry about a hassle. The letter
should have your signature and a copy of
your auto insurance card with it stating
that they have your permission. You can
also keep these items in the glove box
in case you forget to specifically hand
it to them each time they leave. If they
are in an accident in your car with your
permission, then your auto insurance
company will be considered the primary
coverage for the accident. If your
babysitter has auto insurance as well,
it will be considered secondary to
yours.
