California Voters Say No to Prop 17
In what can only be described as a mixed
up victory, Prop 17 was voted down by
the voters of California. There was a
lot of heavy hitting going on both sides
as the proposition made it very good for
some people, and very bad for others.
However, the majority of the auto
insurance holders in the state would
have benefitted from the measure, but it
still failed to pass.
The idea behind Prop 17 was that 82% of
the drivers in California had kept their
same auto insurance company and had kept
auto insurance so that they were
eligible for a discount on their
premiums. This discount was for loyalty
and the proposition would have changed
that so that they could take their auto
insurance anywhere with them. That
discount would have applied at any auto
insurance company, so they could use it
to get better rates at another company.
However, those opposed to it said that
those people who did not keep auto
insurance all the time were being
penalized by it. They said that auto
insurance was not something everyone
needed, so if they chose to use
alternate forms of transportation they
might let their auto insurance lapse.
They said that when these people came
back to get auto insurance they would
have to pay more for their coverage.
They said that the discounts that people
got would be paid for by those without
coverage. Unfortunately there were
enough people worried about their own
hides that they failed to pass it, so
when they are saving money not paying
for auto insurance because they have the
ability to go without, those that cannot
afford that luxury will continue to pay
more.
