Illinois’
Uninsured Drivers
Many people don’t realize
the number of uninsured drivers that they
pass every day on the road. Thousands of
drivers are passing them every day that
are uninsured and unlicensed because they
are in the country illegally. Because they
are illegal, they cannot apply for a
driver’s license, and thus cannot get
insurance, for fear of being deported.
Some illegal aliens apply for a social
security number and pay taxes, but they
still cannot get a driver’s license. This
means that if they are on the road and
they hit you, they will most assuredly be
deported and you are out a whole lot of
money – so lawmakers want to try and stop
the vicious cycle that has become the
driving policy in Illinois.
However, this week the Illinois House is
trying to change that so that even if you
are an illegal immigrant you can still
drive legally and get insurance. This
means that the estimated 250,000 illegal
immigrant drivers in Illinois could get
licenses, and learn how to drive. That’s
right, because if they don’t have a
license they are not only operating a
motor vehicle illegally, but they have
never even been tested to see if they can
operate it properly. They can also get
insurance, which means that if you are hit
by one of them you are not up the creek.
House Bill 1100 – which is also referred
to as the Roadway Safety and Mandatory
Insurance Coverage Act, would allow them
to get “driver’s certificates” which would
be used to drive legally and get
insurance, but would not afford them any
of the other rights that citizens would
get – such as buying a gun or boarding a
plane. If they do not get insurance within
30 days of purchasing the license the
license could be revoked.
It will cost them $50 for the license, but
it seems well worth it for piece of mind
for them and for the other drivers.
