Car
Insurance Increase
A new bill that is
currently going through the Arkansas state
government will increase car insurance by
$12. The bill will create a statewide
trauma network, and would be paid for by
the additional money charged to car
insurance customers.
Democratic Representative Denny Sumpter
introduced the bill, and with the
additional charges on car insurance, it
would end up bringing in about $25 million
a year for the center. The government is
then going to match those funds, so that
they end up raising $40 million for the
Arkansas trauma system.
The House passed the bill as is, and then
it was on to the Senate. The Senate also
liked the bill, but wanted some minor
changed made to it. Those changes were
made and the bill will return on Friday to
the Senate to see if it will be approved.
The Senate Public Health Committee first
listened to testimony that described the
need for a trauma center in the state –
and the fact that most traumatic car
accidents end up with those injured
heading to The Med in Memphis as the other
hospitals do not have the proper
facilities to take care of those types of
injuries.
