Highways
Better than Small Roads
A new study from
moneysupermarket.com has found that
accidents occur more often closer to home
on small roads than they do on major
highways. The car insurance report says
that British drivers are six times more
likely to have an accident by their house
than further away on a busy highway.
The study found that single lane roads are
the second most risky region for drivers –
and that 25% of their drivers have had
some sort of accident on one. It also says
that close to a third of drivers has had
an accident very close to their home.
As road size and traffic increase, the
risk of accident decreases. Strangely
enough, 23% of car insurance claims have
come from those having an accident on a
smaller road, with only 5% having reported
one on a major highway.
The study says that they believe these
numbers come from drivers so used to
driving the roads closer to their homes
that they are not as attentive while
driving as they are on the major highways.
However, the accidents that they have on
the major highways, will usually result in
a larger car insurance claim as those that
are a result of high speeds will have more
damage to the car than those on a smaller
road, where high speeds are not as likely.
